School Uses Wireless Business Phone System

By Jason Kraatz
In Huston Texas, schools are upgrading their communication systems to the newest released communication application from Microsoft and with the new wireless gear 802.11n from the Aruba Networks business phone system. The schools, YES Prep Public Schools, which are charter public schools that has about 4,200 students enrolled in their eight campuses, is using the Lync Server 2010 for second release of Microsoft's Office Communications Server 2007. Currently the school is deploying the Aruba access points and its model 3600 controllers to the eight campuses. The Lync Serve, which is Microsoft's combined communications substitute for their Office Communications Servers, gives multiple collaboration and communication modes, which would include file transfer, video conferencing, VoIP, shared calendars, and instant messaging features.

Director for IT support and engineering at the YES Prep schools Troy Neal said that none of the employees use desk phones anymore. The staff uses a $7 headset to place calls. They use Polycom products which includes Polycom's desktop phone model CX700, CX600, CX300, CX500, and their IP phones. They also use the CX5000 model's features to capture video with a 360-degree angle for group meetings. He also added that Micorsoft provides k-12 schools a discount on their Lync 2010. Compared to the more traditional type of business phone systems like PBXs, the systems quality is much better and cost less. All K-12 schools found in the United States should switch to this system. The school broad spent about $40,000 - $60,000 dollars and about 6 to 9 months to get a campus set up with the old PBX system. With the wireless system, it only took 2 to 3 weeks and a cost of $300 - $3000 dollars for a campus. The quality of the calls, whether video or voice, using the Aruba wireless network, is the same as their old PBX system.

Currently, the school is planning to expand to 13 campuses with about 10,000 students enrolled by 2013. The school decided to switch to a wireless business phone system when the Aruba Networks started to promote their wireless communications gear and solutions as a top performing platform that will run with Microsoft's developing communications technology. The company only just released a layout that guides the set up for the Lync Server 2010 with the Aruba wireless networks. The system has been named as one of the optimization partners for Microsoft Network Infrastructures, alongside Cisco and many other vendors.

Compared to the more traditional type of business phone system like PBXs, the systems quality is much better and cost less.
